Via Carota doesn't take itself too seriously, which makes it one of the most approachable hard reservations in the West Village. There are multiple genuine paths to a table and the walk-in culture here is real, not a rumor.
Reservations release on Resy at 10 AM, 31 days out. The window is competitive but not instantaneous. You have a slightly better chance here than at Carbone or Lilia if you're on at 10 AM sharp. Weekday lunch on the drop date is the easiest Resy path. Dinner slots, particularly weekend dinner, go significantly faster.
Via Carota holds tables for walk-ins at dinner every night. The key is timing. Arrive before 5 PM on weekdays and before 4:30 PM on weekends. After that the wait becomes substantial. One to three hours is common at peak hours on a Friday or Saturday. If you're willing to wait, the bar area is worth it. The food is the same as what's coming out of the kitchen for reserved tables.
The walk-in culture at Via Carota is deliberate, not incidental. Rita Sodi and Jody Williams built the restaurant to feel like a neighborhood place you can drop into, the kind of Italian restaurant that doesn't require a reservation three weeks in advance to feel welcoming. That ethos is reflected in how the room actually operates. The walk-in seats exist because the restaurant wants them to exist, not because there's overflow.
Weeknight walk-ins are considerably more manageable than weekends. A Tuesday or Wednesday arrival at 5 PM can result in a table within 30 to 45 minutes. Lilia in Williamsburg runs a comparable walk-in program.
Via Carota serves lunch and it is meaningfully easier to book than dinner. Weekday lunch on the drop date, 10 AM, 31 days out, is the highest-percentage Resy path at this restaurant. If you're flexible on meal and day, this is your move.
Via Carota is named in Resy's Global Dining Access program for Amex Platinum cardholders. Check the GDA tab in the Resy app before the public window opens on your target date.
